CURING a BROKEN HEART with HOMEOPATHY
Probably the oldest illness to afflict the heart and mind of humanity is the hurt of a broken-heart. Love, our ultimate salvation and highest goal, can alas, produce pain deep enough to destroy mental peace and physical balance. We can lose ourselves in mourning, and we can die of grief. When love is gone we feel fragmented, lost, hopeless and helpless. Apart from "advice to the lovelorn" there is, oddly enough, also a medicinal approach to the mending of a heart in despair.
Homeopathy is equally a medicine of mind and heart as it is a medicine of body. True to its nature, it does not act suppressively, merely masking emotional symptoms behind a cloud of altered brain chemistry. Instead it tremendously assists, and speeds up our own inherent and organic process of resolving grief.
For the first pangs of grief, loss, mourning, shock, or rejected love there is no greater remedy than Ignatia. It is for all acute emotional crises, including a frightening experience, shocking news or the psychological effects of strain and overwork. The person needing it may weep uncontrollably or grieve silently behind a mask of control and repression. The Ignatia state is one of nervousness and oversensitivity, often resulting in physical ailments, typically cramping or spastic. It is the "coping remedy" that will guide us effectively through sad and painful experiences including homesickness and the loss of a parent or loved one. But if the situation becomes chronic and remains unresolved, we move into the territory of its close relative, Nat. Mur.
Natrum Muriaticum (common table salt) is the Homeopathic remedy for long-standing grief, loss, or inner wounding or for a deep-seated sense of personal betrayal or rejection. There is suppression here, as if the solution to an on-going situation of anger or hurt is found in merely tucking it away in some still corner of our being. Nat. Mur. is typically for 'silent grief', for the individual who seeks solitude rather than solace. This stems from an element of fixation, as if there an inability to finally let go, to forgive oneself, others and fully enter into life again. Though he or she are usually a gentle and sensitive person, suffering has created a defensive veneer of aloofness, which can be perceived as outright coldness. Originally idealist and romantic, unhappy situations have created cynicism and pessimism. As the remedy for the classic 'wounded inner child' it is easy to understand why there is a little bit of Nat. Mur. in all of us.
Pulsatilla, the pink anemone, is also a great remedy for broken heart, but with a radically different temperament. The Pulsatilla type is shy, good-natured and often an 'eternal child' They are definitely a people-oriented person whose center of gravity is their emotions. But with this emotional over-sensitivity, they are easily hurt. Mild gentle and over-impressionable, this person has a knack of falling in love with the wrong person, or becoming part of an abusive, 'co-dependant' relationship. Beyond that it is also one of the great remedies for jealousy
Often a shift in our intimate relationships represents part of a much larger pattern of transformation. Even if the causes of a break-up are much more mundane, these times of emotional pain may trigger deep inner change and a reassessment of personal values and direction. The simple use of homeopathic medicines which act directly on bioenergy level will help the process of our transformation to run pure and true and make our journey a "healing crisis".
HOMEOPATHY AND FATIGUE
Fatigue is the single most common complaint heard by doctors, let along wives, husbands, mothers, and co-workers! And what better evidence could we have of pervasive fatigue than the virtual explosion of coffee houses and coffee / coca-cola addicts. Caffeine may give a temporary boost of energy, but only worsens the underlying exhaustion. In fact, we should not be accept fatigue as as a “normal” part of living, but regard it as an early and important sign that all is now well.
There are so many shades and types of fatigue, that it is no wonder that doctors (and spouses) often consider this symptom as trivial, vague, or even annoying. Yet fatigue can be an initial symptom of the whole gamut of disturbances, including life-threatening illness (cancer), nutritional deficiencies (iron or folic acid deficiency), metabolic imbalances (hypoglycemia, low thyroid or adrenals), or just plain overwork and overstudy. Emotional states also play an important role; Even though exhausted we can suddenly become energized by the prospect of a new and exciting experience, social connection or idea. So what to do? In cases of chronic or recurrent fatigue (which seems unjustified by our daily activities) we need to investigate. Once all serious illness are ruled out, we can optimize our nutritional intake, and take supplements as needed. The many toxic factors that are stressing our immune and metabolic systems should be eliminated. Poor liver function, dysbiosis (intestinal toxicity), allergy, chronic viral infections, intestinal parasites, systemic yeast infection, are among the factors well-known to holistic practitioners, factors which decrease the level of vitality and well-being that ought to be our natural state. But even this may be inadequate, and the most healthy individual can be plagued by periods of tiredness.
Homeopathy can help immensely with many types and causes of fatigue, from the most serious to the most trivial. Not surprisingly, these remedies work effectively in all phases of fatigue, and for a wide variety of underlying syndromes.
Kali phos (Potassium Phosphate)
Kali phos is for mental and physical exhaustion, caused by a combination of overwork and psychological factors like worry, stress or overexcitement. It is also excellent for convalescence after an exhausting illness, either acute or chronic, or for persistent muscular weakness and low-grade fever after a flu. The exhaustion is deep, the slightest effort becoming an insurmountable task. Additionally, the individual is nervous and anxious, starting at the slightest sound. This fearfulness may also takes the form of shyness, blushing or avoidance behavior in the form of agoraphobia (fear of going out). There is a desire to be alone and aversion to meeting new people. Even talking, especially to several people at once, is just too stressful. For Kali phos another consequence of exhaustion is irritability with a loss of emotional control. The person may feel aversion to their loved ones, with the possibility of cruelty and sudden, passionate outbursts in which they are speechless with anger.
Avena sativa (Oats)
Avena is an effective remedy for exhaustion and recuperation after a prolonged or debilitating illness, or for the effects of overwork and overstudy, . Often given in tincture form, it helps rebuild the nervous system, having a nutritive effect rather than merely a stimulatory one — and without side effects or toxicity. No sense of edginess, nervousness or hyperexcitability results from its use. The exhausted Avena person may have palpitation and insomnia, while an associated sexual weakness is common.
Another important quality of Avena is its effectiveness for those who are debilitated from the use or abuse of medical or recreational drugs, including tranquilizers, alcohol, and addictive substances. It can help wean people off unwanted substances while providing a natural, healthful substitute. A specific symptom calling for Avena is poor concentration with an inability to keep the mind fixed on any one subject. It is perfect for sharpening mental acuity before an exam, etc., and I have used it on numerous patients for over two decades, with excellent results. Another noticeable effect of Avena is a dramatic increase in visual clarity, likely due to its known affect on the occipital cortex, the area of the brain that processes visual images.
Picricum acidum
Picric acid is an extraordinary remedy for what old time homeopaths used to called “brain fag” (fatigue) and exactly what we call “burn out.” This remedy addresses mental exhaustion occurring from overstudy, prolonged mental strain or anxiety, producing an indifference and lack of will power. There is an aversion to talk, think, or perform any mental task. The Picric acid person is worse from the least psychological or physical exertion and thus lacks the desire to do anything at all. Along with the exhaustion there may be insomnia, burning between scapulae, vertigo, or diarrhea. It also suites the tired headaches of students, teachers, professionals and overworked business people or stressed-out schoolchildren. The pupils or the eyes may be dilated during the headache. Picric acid also addresses weakness and headache from grief or depressing emotions, or from prolonged anemia. The person is sensitive to both hot or cold temperatures, with burning pains along the spine, in legs or other areas, and a sensation of heaviness in the back of the head, down the spine or in the lower limbs.
Gelsemium (Yellow Jasmine)
The Gelsemium patient experiences a weakness that is mental, emotional and physical — a kind of paralysis of the will. They feel they cannot cope, and just give up and laze around. The emotional weakness is often brought about by fear; fear of failure with apprehension, anticipation and dread of any kind of ordeal, examinations, new situations or different activities. An important treatment for anxiety and stage fright, Gelsemium can be literally speechless or paralyzed from fear. Finally the person only wishes to be quiet with an aversion to being disturbed at all. Physically they feel a profound heaviness, especially of the lower limbs, with both muscular weakness and a lack of coordination. They also have the three “D’s:” dull, drowsy and dizzy. Both the weakness and the anxiety may be accompanied by trembling.
With the above symptoms, one can appreciate that Gelsemium is one of our main remedies for the acute influenza, as well as a condition of “never well since the flu,” with weakness, drowsiness and trembling.
Other symptoms indicating this remedy are heavy, droopy eyelids and visual disturbances. They may have a very profuse, clear urine, and this urination actually improves their dullness, heaviness, headache, pain in eyes, dim vision, etc. Finally, they are worse in every way from hot and humid, oppressive weather.
Phosphoricum acidum (Phosphoric acid)
This remedy best suits to a mild and sensitive person who becomes overwhelmed by emotional events or illness, leading to state of apathy, listlessness, burn-out and indifference to everything, especially the things that used to interest him/her the most. There is physical and psychological weakness. The mind seems to grind to a halt, with poor comprehension; he can’t collect his ideas, hunts for words and has a poor memory. Phos acid is one of our great remedies for the effects of both sudden or prolonged grief, or for lost love. The person is listless, disinclined to talk, and answers only in monosyllables, or repeat the same sentences or refrain over and over again: “Woe is me,” “I don’t want to live anymore,” etc. It is an important remedy for the problems that can occur during teenage growth spurts, where the child seems to outstrip their nutritional and neurological stamina. It is also very appropriate to mental strain from over-study or overwork. Phosphoric acid is chilly, sweats easily, and craves fruits or other refreshing and juicy foods.
Arsenicum album (White oxide of Arsenic)
Arsenic is an extremely important and common homeopathic medicine, used for some of the most grave and serious disease, as well as the most acute and superficial. It is also an important constitutional medicine e.g. one that can be prescribed to match a person’s entire psychological, metabolic and health profile. But in all these cases, certain key characteristics are seen, namely the presence of weakness, restlessness and anxiety. There is a sudden sense of total exhaustion, often triggered by the least physical exertion. Anxiety is pervasive, but tends to focus on the state of one’s health and a fear of death. Insecurity and dependency, which can result from chronic fatigue, cause the person to be extremely cautious, avoiding any risks. As a further expression of this state, they tend to be quite fastidious, economical, or may even collect and keep all kinds of objects (valuable or just hoarding this or that). Other features of Arsenicum are extreme chilliness, progressive weight loss, foul breath and excretions, and intense burning pains. Everything for Arsenicum is worse at night.
These few remedies are part of the wealth of homeopathy that can be applied to simple causes of fatigue, or serious, debilitating and chronic exhaustion and weakness. I would like to continue discussing the many more remedies that are useful here— but I suddenly feel really tired.
HOMEOPATHIC (not CHICKEN ) SOUP for the SOUL
onnie sat speechless for a while. She looked like the weight of the world was on her shoulders. But then, she had just ended a long standing relationship, and it had ended badly. As I inquired further into her state, she sighed deeply, then suddenly burst into intense sobbing. I passed over the box of kleenex but oddly this act of commiseration seem to take her aback. Embarrassed, she quickly recovered her composure. “Sorry” she stammered, but she was now irritated with me for witnessing her moment of weakness...
Not only is a “broken heart” the oldest diagnosis in the world, it is also responsible for a good part of the literature and music produced throughout the ages. It is at once an inevitability, a mystery and a test of one’s deepest beliefs and hopes. What to do? The options as understood by most people afflicted with loss, grief or other forms of emotional shock are grim; 1. Let time heal all wounds 2. Go on Prozac or some other mind-numbing drug which only suppresses and does not heal 3. Read an equally mind-numbing self-help book about how to look on the bright side of things. We are talking grim!
Yet another possibility exists, that could properly be termed “first aid for the soul,” through the use of a simple homeopathic medicine. Just as Arnica is known to many as a unique medicine for physical trauma, equally as powerful for the slings and arrows of outrageous emotional fortune is the remarkable little homeopathic herb, Ignatia amara, often used in the 30c strength.
Generically, Ignatia can be used for anyone suffering acutely from the effects of anger, disappointment, a severe fright, being humiliated, grief, loss, worry, jealousy—a veritable catalog of the heart’s failings. Such individuals can take the remedy as often as needed, every hour or even more frequently, as feelings demand. The effect is not a deadening or denial, but a quicker and smoother resolution of inner conflicts, and the re-emerging of a more objective and hopeful perspective.
More individually, a specific type of person will respond best and most deeply to the medicine. and it may even change difficult, life-long emotional habits. The prime Ignatia candidate is a romanticist with high ideals and expectations, both from life and from themselves, resulting in a driven quality and perfectionism. Combined with a strong sense of responsibility, we have the ingredients for guilt and self-blame. They, or life, have set themself up for a fall, and disappointments hit hard.
Yet they carry their inner conflicts silently, brooding, almost indulging the sweet sadness. Though their moods may be on a roller coaster, emotional outbursts are controlled quickly, resulting in typical Ignatia characteristics—deep sighs, short sobs, tears welling up, constant swallowing of a lump, a quivering lip, biting the inner cheek—all indicators that emotions are being bottled up. At another stage they may use food as a surrogate for their unresolved anger or grief, inducing various eating disorders.
Physically Ignaita has all kinds of changeable and erratic symptoms, nervous spasms, twitches, tics, a nervous cough, tightness in the chest, cramps or anxiety in the stomach. They are also typically very sensitive to both tobacco smoke and coffee.
I sent Bonnie home with her bottle of little white pills, Ignatia. Though skeptical, she called me several days latter saying that she felt much calmer, more at peace, almost detached from the whole affair—and she hadn’t even had to read the little self-help book she had carried in with her on that first visit.
It is 200 years since the brilliant moment of vision that led to the development of homeopathy. During this time the ideas, theories and initial successes have been tested in the crucible of human suffering and illness. Consistently, the remedies have demonstrated their remarkable power to help overcome illness, prevent disease and improve health on a fundamental level. Turning the lens of homeopathy towards any physical, emotional or mental problem, we see a large body of accumulated knowledge and experience, making the path to health both clear and sure. Made from plant, mineral or animal, and from substances that are neutral (chalk), healing in nature (marigold flowers) or frankly toxic (mercury), homeopathic pharmaceutical preparation renders them all non-toxic and safe, without harmful side-effects. When the remedies act, it is through promoting biological and physiological healing in the body, not through the ‘smoke and mirrors’ of symptom suppression that is the cornerstone of contemporary medical treatment.
Though not considered a life-threatening condition, bladder infection or irritation provides an example of homeopathy’s effectiveness in everyday complaints. The term cystitis includes a range of possibilities: there may be bacterial infection of the bladder or of the urethral canal that leads to it, or there may be irritation where no bacteria, virus or fungus can be found, in spite of symptoms identical to infection. Because of anatomical differences, these conditions occur much more often in women, caused by easy migration of bacteria into the area, and a tendency to mechanical irritation. Though bacteria may be the final culprit, bladder problems have many background causes. Local irritation often occurs after intercourse. Spices, coffee or tea, and various drugs can directly irritate the lining of the bladder. (In fact coffee drinkers have ten times the incidence of bladder cancer than those who use none.) Nutritional deficiencies play a predisposing role, weakening the resistance of the bladder to infection, particularly in the case of Vitamins A, E, C and Zinc. Food allergies may be a significant factor, especially in children. In my experience, a wheat/gluten allergy is particularly capable of inducing recurrent bladder infections or even bed-wetting in children. Later in life, prostate problems in men can be a contributing cause. Besides all these obvious factors, homeopaths recognize that recurrent infections and sensitivity to disease in the genito-urinary area is based on deep-seated patterns of susceptibility, which only constitutional treatment can eradicate. For occasional irritations, or for the treatment of acute infections, specific homeopathic remedies provide a non-toxic and highly effective alternative to antibiotics or pain-killers.
The essence of the homeopathic method is finding a remedy that exactly matches the symptom complex expressed by a person who is ill. This unique remedy will stimulate the body to repair itself and regain biological balance. At the professional level, a homeopathic doctor will seek to find a ‘constitutional remedy’—one that matches the whole person. For self-care, or prescribing for acute illness we need only look for the remedy that matches all the symptoms of the illness itself.
Cantharis is usually the first (and often only) remedy needed in cases of acute cystitis. This remedy is prepared from the infamous “Spanish Fly”, a small Mexican insect that has a reputation as an aphrodisiac. Though the drug contained in these insects may produce a reflex stimulation and congestion of blood into the genital area, its primary effect is to violently irritate the whole urinary tract, with the potential to cause serious damage to the kidney and urinary linings. Homeopathically potentized into a subtle energy medicine, no toxic or irritant chemical effects are retained, and the substance becomes our first line of defense in cases of acute bladder irritation or infection. With a constant desire to urinate (urging) and an unfinished sensation (tenesmus), the urine is passed in small drops with intense burning and bladder spasms. Cantharis is very suitable for the first sense of irritation or frequent urination, indicating that a bladder infection is immanent, or at the other end of the scale, when the sensations are so intense that each drop of urine feels like passing molten metal. Aching in the back may also be present. The whole genital area is sensitive to the touch, and an the individual is worse from drinking cold water, and better from external warmth. The sight of running water will often aggravate the need to urinate if Cantharis is the indicated remedy. The urine may be reddish in color or have some blood in it. The effects of Cantharis are often dramatic. Over a 20-year period I have seen many patients free of symptoms after just one or two doses.
Though Cantharis displays all of the symptoms commonly seen in bladder problems, there are other remedies which are variations on the theme, where one or another symptom dominates the picture. This is what homeopathy is about; the subtle differentiation of the body-language we call symptoms, body language that contains the essential key to which remedy will assist the process of self-cure. Mercurius corrosivus has less burning than Cantharis, but more intense urging, as if never finished (tenesmus), with a constant desire to urinate, though nothing comes. the urine feels hot, with stitching, tearing pains. The trio of features that immediately leads one to think of Apis melifica, the Honeybee, as a suitable bladder remedy are the very small amount of urine that is passed, an intense feeling of drowsiness, and swelling or edema in various part of the body. The person is usually without thirst and feels suffocated on lying down. The person requiring Apis may be a nervous type, worse from warm environments, from the slightest touch or pressure, and after sleeping. The urine is dark and cloudy. Though there is much desire, only a few drops are passed at a time, or there may be a complete inability to urinate at all due to the internal swelling of the urethral canal.
Berberis vulgaris (Barberry) is a herb native to North America, and one of the most useful plants for kidney ailments of all kinds. When bladder infections start to produce symptoms that settle into the kidney area or low back, Berberis is strongly indicated. The pain is felt deep in the low back area and extends forward into the abdomen, bladder area or even thighs, wandering and changing location. The person is worse from the slightest motion or jarring, and the back is stiff, making it difficult to rise from sitting. With a constant desire to urinate, the urine is typically reddish and slimy, from deposits of mucus and red material like ‘brick dust’.
Equisetum (Horse Tail) has become a popular source of organic Silica, commonly sold in Natural Food stores. Campers know it well, since its fibrous stalk and leaves make it an excellent scouring brush for burnt-on pancake mix! For less mundane purposes, it is a remarkable remedy not only for urinary irritation or infection, but for tonifying a weak bladder. It is a main remedy for bed-wetting in children due to poor bladder tone. In these cases however, remember that two common underlying causes that should not be overlooked: food allergies and intestinal parasites. The symptoms that indicate Equisetum are a feeling of fullness, even after urinating, with a small amount of dark colored and mucus-laden urine. there is less burning or tenesmus than with Cantharis but more mucus.
Staphysagria, the Delphinium, has the unique symptoms of burning sensations that occur whether urinating or not. It is an important remedy for infections coming on after intercourse, or ‘Honeymoon Cystitis’. Unlike some of the other remedies discussed, Staphysagria has some important emotional symptoms. It is a remedy for the effects of mental wounding or humiliation, resulting in a suppressed rage. If cystitis occurs after a local injury or trauma to the genital area, the remedy is confirmed.
Causticum relates to weakness of the bladder muscle, which may result in so-called ‘stress incontinence’. On coughing, laughing or even physical exertion, some urine may be accidentally released. It is another important remedy for enuresis, when urine is lost in the first part of the night. In the case of infection. Causticum is also invaluable for inability to urinate after surgery, or where the bladder seems almost paralyzed.
These are some of the medicines which, when carefully chosen, can promptly begin the healing process. For home use, a ‘low potency’ is the best strength to use, such as the 6C or 12C. When symptoms are very intense, the remedies can be taken hourly or even more often, depending on severity. With improvement, the chosen remedy can be taken less often. Taken every 2 or 3 hours, the dosage can be gradually reduced over one or more days. If after several hours there is no reaction, the remedy may not be the appropriate one, and after re-thinking things, another remedy can be tried. In more chronic situations, like weak bladder, a remedy can be taken once a day for a week or more to note the degree of improvement. Obviously in cases of recurrent infection or more serious symptoms, or just for your own peace of mind, professional consultation to confirm the diagnosis is advised. Of course, if your practitioner is also knowledgeable in homeopathy, so much the better! Homeopathy is an ‘interactive’ healing art; it requires you to apply your capacity for observation and judgment. For those who believe in responsibility for their own health and well-being, it is an empowering medicine, enabling the body to heal naturally, safely and deeply.
The immune system is an extraordinary integration of organs, functions, and cells that acts as a kind of internal membrane, shielding the body from the harmful effects of microorganisms, toxins, allergens, and other stressors. Understandably, this defense and surveillance system is under incredible stress, not only combatting natural causes of illness, but overwhelmed by the load of toxic chemicals which inundate our world, and enter our body through air, water, and food. Over time, small cracks may begin to show in this organic armour. Allergic hypersensitivity is one of the earliest, and most typical signs of an imbalanced immune system, with intense reactions occurring from exposure to minor or normally harmless stimulation. Hayfever is the most commonly recognized allergy, affecting 20% of Americans — as many as 50 million adults and children — making it the sixth most common chronic illness. Known medically as “allergic rhinitis,” hayfever occurs when specific plant proteins act on the lining membranes of the nose. The histamine reaction that follows results in the familiar itching eyes and nose, sneezing, nasal discharge, puffy face, and scratchy throat. Though allergy sufferers may find some relief by avoiding greenery, few places are completely safe from plant allergens — wind-borne pollen can travel up to 400 miles. Hayfever and airborne allergies can also be the underlying factor responsible for recurrent ear infections and sinus problems. Allergy sufferers should consider the possibility that undiagnosed food allergies, particularly to common allergens like dairy and wheat, are contributing factors. Additionally, hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), is often found in conjunction with allergy, as well as a weakened adrenal gland.
Allergy shots and antihistamines gives symptomatic relief, but do not address the underlying causes and may have toxic side effects. On the other hand, homeopathic treatment plays an important role in calming the allergic reaction, while building immune strength and changing deeper patterns of susceptibility and predisposition. Remedies made from plant, mineral, or animal substances are prepared in minute amounts and prescribed according to scientific principles. The essence of the method lies in finding a remedy whose symptom-picture matches the symptom-picture of the person. Homeopathy has clearly shown that whatever symptoms a substance can cause, it can heal. The correct substance will reinstate the inherent tendency towards health and vitality, sometimes dramatically. Thus acute conditions, as well as serious and chronic illness, are amenable to homeopathic care. Furthermore, a “constitutional” remedy — one that matches the total psychological, metabolic, and physiological profile of the individual — will improve the entire level of health and well-being, often eradicating deeper disease tendencies.
For acute symptoms, two styles of homeopathy are available to consumers. Combination remedies which combine 2 to 8 or more ingredients can be used where the choice of a single remedy is unclear, and there is little familiarity with homeopathic medicines. Single remedies are an excellent choice when the symptoms are clear and definite, and the basic information on the common homeopathic allergy medicines, such as outlined below, is available.
Sabadilla (Cevadilla)
Sabadilla is a Mexican plant which has a unique place among homeopathic remedies, corresponding to the most intense sneezing fits possible. Violent sneezing is often triggered by odors; flowers, mown grass, garlic, coffee, etc. Cold air or bright lights will have a similar effect; It is almost as if the individual is allergic to cold. Sneezing is accompanied by an intense flow of tears, a profuse discharge from the nose, and red, burning eyes. Symptoms may include a sore throat which is worse on the left side and better from hot drinks. The “Sabadilla person” gets frequent cold which settle in the nose and throat. Overall they are chilly and all their symptoms are better in warm air, or wrapping up warmly. Additionally the person may be anxious and startle easily. They tend toward hypochondriasis, thinking that they have cancer, or that there is some deformity in their body. Sabadilla is also an important remedy for all kinds of intestinal parasites, which could underlie the immune weakness.
Allium cepa (Red Onion)
The onion provides a clear example of homeopathic magic, which transforms a common substance into a powerful healing agent. What onion produces in its native form, it cures as a homeopathic preparation. This member of the Lily Family creates intense tearing and irritation in the eyes and nose, and is the primary remedy for these same symptoms as seen in colds, flu, or allergy. Like Sabadilla, Allium has sneezing, though less intense. The nasal discharge is very watery, profuse and acrid, such that it burns the upper lip and makes the skin red and raw. The eyes are bloodshot and sensitive to light. Does this remind us of chopping onions? But symptoms are not limited to the nose area; there may also be a tickling, hacking cough. The throat feels raw and there is pain in the larynx with each cough. Allium symptoms are worse in a warm room and better in the open air.
Arsenicum album (White Oxide of Arsenic)
Arsenic, unlike the common onion, is poisonous in its native state. Homeopathic preparation transforms this mineral into a healing energy medicine, retaining none of the original toxic material. There is the usual runny nose, sneezing and the discharge, like Allium cepa, is acrid. Arsenicum has more burning sensations and is markedly worse at night, particularly after midnight. The individual feels weak overall, with a simultaneous restlessness and an unusual feeling of uneasiness, insecurity, or anxiety. Arsenicum is particularly useful for those who have asthmatic tendencies along with their hayfever, and it is a common remedy for nightly asthma attacks. Closely related, Arsenicum iodatum (Arsenic iodide) has swollen and tender glands, and the nasal discharge becomes thick and greenish or yellow-green. The ears and eustachian tubes may become blocked.
Napthalinum (Tar Camphor)
The homeopathic potential of this coal tar derivative was discovered when it was noted that people working in Naphtha (mothball) factories suffered from hayfever-like symptoms. It is used for more chronic cases, both for prevention and cure, though its symptom-picture is not as clearly defined as Allium or Sabadilla. There is much discharge and sneezing, and often a spasmodic cough. It has a particular affinity for the eye, and has been used for cataracts and retinal problems as well.
Arundo (Reed)
Arundo is a grass which is appropriate for typical hayfever symptoms, but its unique indication is an intense burning and itching of the roof of the mouth, the eyes, the nostrils, and the ear canals. The person may see floating lights before the eyes. There is much post-nasal drip, and often a loss of smell. The mucus may affect the chest, resulting in a bronchial cough. It also is effective for eczema with itching and burning, a condition which is common in allergy-prone individuals.
Arum triphyllum (Jack-in-the-Pulpit)
When the irritation causes the person to constantly pick and bore at their nose, even to the point of bleeding, think of Arum. The itching and burning in the nose and throat are particularly intense and the secretions extremely acrid. The incredible effects of the remedy were brought home graphically to me during a “herb-hunting” picnic many years ago. My doctor friend and I quite inadvertently let a fragment of the bright red berries of Arum fall into the potato salad, looking identical to the pieces of red bell pepper in the dish. The beet red face, intense streaming tears, and burning sensations produced in the girl who accidentally got this in her mouth still remain indelibly imprinted on my mind. The symptoms disappeared immediately when we pulled the Arum morsel off the back of her throat. In spite of this instant cure, she was not amused.
Ambrosia (Ragweed)
While allergy shots have been a mainstay of medical allergy treatment for years, homeopaths have used preparations of Ragweed, a common allergen, for hayfever relief since 1890. This member of the Daisy Family has some typical allergy symptoms, such as smarting and burning eyes, but its uniqueness lies in the fact that the person feels particularly “stuffed up” in the nose, head, and chest. The nose has profuse, watery discharges, or becomes stuffed and dry. In either case, nosebleeds are typical of the remedy. There may be a wheezy cough and pains in the chest. Another unusual symptom is the intense itching of the eyelids.
Taking the Remedy
Whichever remedy seems most suitable can be tried in a 6x or 6c strength. If symptoms are intense, take 4 homeopathic pellets (or 10 drops) as often as needed, even every 15 minutes. With improvement, or with milder symptoms, frequency of doses can be reduced to every one or two hours. If not effective, another remedy can easily be tried. If it works for you for a while, but then ceases, a higher potency (12x, 30x, 12c, or 30c) should be tried. In all chronic conditions, the guidance and expertise of a professional homeopath is invaluable. It may require a course of “constitutional” prescribing to truly eradicate the annoying and debilitating syndrome known as hayfever. With time, patience, and the inconceivable magic inherent in the plants, minerals, and organic life around us, even allergy can yield to what Hippocrates called the vis medicatrix naturae — the healing power of nature.
When feeling well, it is easy to take for granted the marvellous machinery that propels us around our daily tasks and pleasures. Yet sudden events can quickly bring us an awareness of what it means to temporarily lose this remarkable mobility. Wether athlete or couch potato, child or elderly, we all will suffer from pulls and stretches that bring us to a screeching halt. Still, it may be surprising to learn that injury is the most common medical condition and the most frequent cause of pain and loss of function.
What is the actual nature of the sprains or strains that we are destined to experience? A sprain is an injury that damages the support tissue around a joint; This may include the ligaments which form a capsule around the joint, specialized ligamentous bands that hold the joint together, and tendons that attach nearby. These crucial tissues can be overstretched (strained), damaged (sprained) or partially or compleltely severed (ruptured) by an injury. Some joints contain specialized cartilage within them to further cushion the stress applied. This includes the well known “discs” in the spine, the smooth cartilages of the knee, and small cushions of cartilage in the wrist and hinge of the jaw. Though anatomists have gone to great lengths to name all these structures, what is important to the injured party is the swelling, bruising, pain and disability they experience. Besides, joint structures are notoriously slow to heal. Causes include the naturally poor blood supply of cartilage, common nutrient deficiencies, and the intense stress put on joints during motion. A poorly healed joint tends to be structurally weaker, with overstretched ligaments and misaligned joint surfaces. All this means chronicity, with the joint now being “bad”, “acting up” or “going out” with some regularity. Such areas can develop restrictive adhesions and tend towards painful and debilitating osteoarthritis.
Homeopathy however, has some tricks up its therapeutic sleeve that are unique, promoting healing in specific tissues, preventing chronic after effects and clearing up long standing problems. Nutritional products, like glucosamine sulphate, provides structural support, while homeopathy works on a subtler level, helping direct and organize the body’s resources for optimal healing. The key to using homeopathy is The homeopathic medicines discussed below span the spectrum of remedies required for treating acute, recurrent or chronic sprains. Learning the “big six” remedies for sprains, strains and injuries can provide a safe, non-toxic and highly effective method of self-care for life’s bumps and bruises.
Arnica montana (Leopard’s Bane)
Arnica is the first remedy for trauma or injury of any kind, even if only for a single dose. It reduces the shock experienced by the body, significantly reduces pain, swelling, bruising and inflammation, and starts one on the road to healing. For a simple or superficial strain, it may be all that is needed. Arnica also has a strong effect on muscular tissue. Pulled, stretched and sore muscles respond almost magically to a few doses of Arnica. Other key symptoms that indicate you are on the Arnica trail include a great sensitivity to touch or jarring movements and a significant amount of anxiety regarding the injury. In acute cases, Arnica can be used hourly or even more often, reducing the dose over some days as things improve. Also remember Arnica where a single, terrific sprain—even many years before—has resulted in a chronic painful or weak joint. Arnica, in high doses (200c or 1M), will clear the pattern of trauma from the tissues and allow healing to begin.
Bryonia alba (White Bryony)
Bryonia is a remedy for hot, red, swollen joints that are excruciatingly painful on the least motion. Sound familiar? This is typical of a newly injured area, where damage has occurred to deeper tissue and the body reacts with severe inflammation. The pain is typically stitching, but in the heat of the moment what is most reliable is the fact that motion hurts and holding the area (or whole body) completely still offers some relative relief. Local heat may help, as does tight pressure or bandaging. Bryonia is also remarkably effective for the pain of fracture or bruised bone. It can be used as frequently as described above, or alternating with Arnica during the first few days of a sprain.
Rhus tox (Poison Ivy)
Rhus has a remarkable affinity for ligaments. It also plays a dual role, both the main remedy for sprained ligaments as well as for the symptoms of chronic osteoarthritis. It comes in after Arnica and Bryonia, but may be more important for the longer process of reducing chronic inflammation and promoting the healing of ligaments and connective tissue. Classically, the symptoms calling for Rhus are pains which are felt most intensely when first moving after resting. Limbering up the joint gradually improves the painful stiffness. For chronic problems the involved joint may start to show a sensitivity to damp, cold, or even weather changes.
Bellis perennis (Common Daisy)
Bellis is a remedy that is has been called the “old gardener’s remedy” because of its relation to sore, worn-out joints. Today it could be called the “old computer user’s remedy”, as it is the perfect remedy for repetitive strains (RSI), a condition of continual microtrauma that adds up to severe joint damage . Yet it is appropriate for injury with intense swelling or bruising, beyond the level of Arnica and is also our main remedy for strained joints and the painful effects due to prolonged standing.
Symphytum officinalis (Comfrey)
Thought of mainly for speeding the healing of fractures, Symphytum is also very useful where there is damage to covering of bone, the periosteum. At times the trauma is so powerful that a small piece of bone is pulled away at the place where ligaments or tendons attach. This type of “avulsion fracture” will most likely be diagnosed on X-ray, and then the remedy will be well indicated.
Ruta graveolens (Garden Rue)
Ruta provides unique help for healing of strained or damaged cartilage or tendon. This makes it the ideal remedy for injury to areas like the knee, low back, neck and wrist. Like Rhus tox, Ruta has soreness, restlessness and can be worse after resting or sitting too long. One of the main differences though is that Ruta is for a weakened joints which are unstable and unreliable. The whole area can feel weary and heavy. Ruta is also excellent for cysts or deposits in tendons or around joints as the result of an injury. It is actually capable of dissolving wrist ganglions or joint cysts, as I have witnessed dozens of times over the years.
Additionally, remedies may be needed to help rehabilitate the damaged, weakened tissues. For this, there is another group of remedies which can be mentioned briefly. More details can be found in books on the subjects (such as Homeopathy for Musculoskeletal Healing by the author).
Thiosinaminum is a remarkable remedy from the mustard plant that is capable of removing adhesion and excess scar tissue. Several months use is required, but results can be quite surprising. Calcarea fluorica is for a joint that has been repeatedly sprained and whose ligaments have become lax and non-supportive. Silicea has a similar effect for strengthening ligament, cartilage and even injured bone. Both Calc fluor and Silicea can be used in the form of a tissue salt (6x potency) several times a day, even while using other joint remedies like Rhus tox.
Depending on the severity of a sprain, remedies can be taken for several weeks to assure complete healing. Lower potencies (3x, 6x, 12x or 3c, 6c and 12c) can be taken three times daily, while a remedy in the 30x or 30c potency is usually taken once daily. A good plan is to gradually raise the strength of the medicine when its positive effect seems to be less noticeable or healing comes to a standstill. If symptoms change, the remedy should be changed to fit the new situation. In this way we follow the lead of our own deep healing resources, and assist the natural tendency towards regaining optimal health.

Skin is hard to miss. It is the only readily visible organ of the body (except for the eyes) and gives us our distinctive human form. Yet it is so ever-present that, through familiarity, we easily take it for granted and fail to perceive the many crucial biological roles that it plays as the largest single organ in the body. Derived from the same embryonal tissue which forms the nervous system, the skin is a major sense organ, providing the sense of touch, pressure, temperature, and pain. It is truly our source of sensitivity and real contact with the world. It is an important organ of the circulation — essential for temperature regulation. The comfort level we enjoy inside ourselves is largely due to the efforts of the skin in cooling us off, or insulating us from chilling outer temperatures. The skin, like the lungs, intestines, and kidneys, is a key detoxification organ, eliminating as much fluids and wastes in a day as the kidneys themselves. Many toxins that cannot exit via other routes of elimination can find their way through the skin, which has formed the basis of many traditional systems of detoxification. Hydrotherapy, saunas and sweats, massage, and many other universally practiced cleansing rituals (including a shower!) are rich tokens of the crucial detoxification function of the integeumentary system. Beyond all these essential functions, the skin is truly a “universal organ,” that expresses the metabolic, hormonal and nutritional status of the entire organism and reflects subtle psychological, biochemical and neurological alterations. In fact, changes in almost any specific internal organ—liver, kidney, lungs, intestines—are mirrored in the skin.
Being a universal organ, the skin also expresses itself in a remarkable number of ways. Its texture, tone, luster, and color show tremendous and subtle variation, and skin problems express themselves in a myriad of ways. Medically, the skin provides many diagnostic clues to the presence of various diseases, but when it comes to the treatment of most skin diseases, mainstream therapy takes a more limited approach. Most common chronic skin diseases, like eczema, psoriasis, and seborrhea, are treated with suppressive, symptomatic drugs, with little regard for the underlying internal causes. Holistic medicine, and homeopathy in particular, recognizes skin conditions as constitutional — representing a disturbance at the core of the individual. The ultimate solution, as in any chronic disease, lies in transforming the entire health of the person.
Skin Expressions
Homeopathy sees symptoms as accurate and eloquent guides to assisting the body in its own healing work. For the homeopath, a precise prescription depends not on the name of the skin condition, but on the sensations experienced by the person, the symptoms expressed on the tissue, and the circumstances and conditions which make the condition apparently better or worse. The appearance of the skin is always revealing. Is there discoloration? Is the skin dry, scaly, flaky, weeping or oozing any fluids? If there is a rash, is it raised or flat, are there fluid-filled vesicles (herpes or blister-like), or large areas of swelling (like hives)? With more chronic conditions, there can be cracking of the skin, hardening, or just rawness. The degree of itchiness, burning, crawling or other sensations must be clarified in our minds. To then hone in on the right remedy, the exact “modalities,” the factors which aggravate or ameliorate the sensations and eruptions, have to be carefully and definitely determined. These pertain to time of day or night, temperature, effects of clothing, touch, scratching or rubbing, application of hot or cold water, relation to eating, to the menstrual cycle, and whatever other obvious or obscure correlations we can make. These factors do not have to make any logical sense — the body’s has its own logic and we can rely on its accuracy. Lastly, careful attention should be paid to the mental and emotional qualities of the individual. Particularly, what effect does the skin have on the person. Does it engender irritability and anger, shame, worry and anxiety, or is there little emotional feeling associated with the problem? In other words, the remedies for dealing with chronic skin conditions should be considered for their overall metabolic and psychological symptom profile, not just for the skin symptoms. Finding the remedy that matches every aspect of the person’s biological, psychological, and even spiritual uniqueness. is the realm of the professional homeopathic doctor. That being said, there is nevertheless room here for self-care, particularly with acute rashes, hives, allergic reactions and local irritations. These are much more properly “on and of” the skin, and can be dealt with by a variety of effective remedies. What follows is a selection of homeopathic medicines which are particularly common and useful for various skin problems.
Urtica urens or Stinging Nettle has long been used an an iron-rich vegetable, but homeopathy has been able to turn its stinging, irritating quality into a healing medicine. The symptoms indicating Urtica include intense itching, stinging, and burning, often with red raised blotches. It is particularly suitable for hives or skin rashes from allergies, shellfish or parasites, or the effects of hot weather. Urtica rashes are worse in cool temperature, from bathing, after exercise, at night, and after sleep. Rubbing can temporarily relieve symptoms, or cause the itching to jump elsewhere.
Apis mellifica is made from the sting of the Honey Bee, and as expected, it is a homeopathic remedy for intense allergic or histamine-like reactions. Pains are stinging (yes, like a bee sting), and there can be much burning and shiny redness. There is great swelling, making Apis the first choice for most cases of hives or urticaria—as well as the effects of certain insect bites. Apis symptoms are worse from heat in any form, whether from warmth of the bed, of a room, hot weather, etc. and better from cold applications or bathing.
Arsenicum is made from highly poisonous Arsenic Oxide. Naturally, the whole point of homeopathic pharmacy is the creation of completely safe, non-toxic energy medicines and, homeopathically, arsenic becomes a gentle yet powerful constitutional remedy for a full range of human ailments, with zero risk factor. The skin here shows much burning and itching. There is extreme dryness, the skin sometimes almost like parchment. It is useful for eczemas, seborrhea, psoriasis, and almost any other named skin condition, where the skin is scaly, and worse from scratching, causing burning and bleeding. The individual is restless and anxious, and tends to be extremely chilly. Arsenic is a big remedy that could be effective in herpes, acne, abscesses, ulcers, etc., where the person is better from warm applications and worse from cold, exertion, or the internal use of alcohol. An Arsenic person can be fairly nervous, but also is often very suppressed and “closed” as a result of inner insecurity, this inability to be forthright giving them a traditional description as a”miserly” type. It is rare to meet an Arsenicum patient who is not suspicious and skeptical. And yet the highly organized and fastidious make-up of this type makes them good candidates for becoming homeopathic practitioners!
Sulphur is a core remedy in homeopathy, as it is a key element in biological life, being an essential part of all protein. It may be our most important skin remedy, which can make it difficult to prescribe — it always seems indicated! Sulphur conditions are worse from getting heated, from the heat of the bed or from wearing woolens. The skin is basically scruffy, unhealthy and subject to easy infection and irritation. There is itchiness, redness, and burning, especially in the folds of the skin. So intense is the itching that scratch they must, even until it bleeds and burning senations occur. All symptoms are worse at night in bed. Essential “hot-blooded,” the Sulphur person overheats easily, finding covers intolerable at night. Emotions can be just as volcanic and the Sulphur type is often pictured as the chronic grumbler and ne’er do well.
Rhus tox is none other than poison ivy. As expected it is applicable to poison-ivy type rashes including shingles, herpes, hives, and other “vesicular” rashes. The skin is dry, hot, burning, itching, red, and swollen. The rash is worse after washing, getting chilled or from damp weather or environments, and are better from heat. Rhus can antidote chronic effects of poison ivy or oak, even from years before.
Skin...whether the bearer of subtle sensual pleasure, or the cause of an intolerable itching irritation, we need to look more deeply at this seemingly superficial organ. It warms us, cools us, detoxifies us, and reflects us for the outer world to see. Homeopathy is one way to naturally and effectively help it maintain its extraordinary balance between the uncountable forces that impact us from within and without, a sentinel on the border between the I and the you.
Some conditions, though not life-threatening, can nonetheless interfere, at times severely, with our ability to live and function freely. Such a condition is herpes labialis, known to millions as the “cold sore” or “fever blister” because of its sudden appearance during acute illness. But herpes is hardly limited to these times, and can arise at any time that the immune system is temporarily off guard. Herpes Simplex I, responsible for the common cold sore, is part of a group of viruses (genital herpes (Herpes II), shingles (herpes zoster) and chickenpox) that have a long and checkered relationship with the human organism. Like many viruses the herpes group can form a literal symbiosis with their host, living comfortably, and chronically in the tissues and cells; not virulent enough to become rampant and cause a system-wide infection, but strong enough to resist the immune system’s attempts at eviction. Herpes virus remains indefinitely in the thin skin around the lips, nose and chin. Here it stays in a relatively dormant form, until various stresses, such as fever, a cold (hence its name), exhaustion, anxiety or chilling, loss of sleep, etc. allow it to break through the local defense and go on a replicating spree. The body responds with inflammation and the formation of one or more fluid-filled blisters they may persists for a few days to a few weeks, and during this period it is contagious through direct contact. Other symptoms can include fever, fatigue, swollen glands, and muscle pain. As simple as it is, like viruses responsible for the common cold and flu, has proved particularly recalcitrant and resistant to treatment. Though several nutritional and herbal approaches can be successful, homeopathy often works more deeply and with more rapidity.
Homeopathy works on the premise that the inherent intelligence of the body is always motivated towards correcting and optimizing health. Symptoms are not seen as merely part of a disease process, but as the process of cure itself. and express the various ways in which the body is trying to overcome illness. Thus instead of suppressing symptoms, homeopathic medicines seek to duplicate the immune and neurological process which create symptoms as an adaptive response. The way homeopathic remedies are prescribed then, is by using a remedy that would produce the same symptoms in a healthy person. These remedies may be made form herbs, tress, minerals, gases, animal substances or “imponderables” like x-ray or sunlight. But in each case they are not used as in a chemical, material form, but put through a specialized homeopathic pharmaceutical process which transforms them into a a subtle healing force, a “potentized” remedy. In this way, the body’s healing efforts are augmented, and optimal health is achieved and maintained. While homeopathy is ideal for acute, intense illness—including inflammations, infections, colds, migraines, etc.—it also impressively effective for many chronic illnesses. Though homeopathy is pre-eminent system for home use, prescribing for these advanced conditions is best left to a homeopathic professional.
Homeopathic textbooks list over 130 remedies for the facial herpes. Fortunately, in practice a small handful of these are effective in the majority of cases, saving us several years of intense study!! Each remedy discussed below can be used based on the specific symptom picture. If it is not effective, the next best choice can be used. Standard homeopathic texts may offer more detailed information, to make a definitive, accurate and effective prescription.
Nat mur
Through homeopathic science, common table salt (Natrum muriaticum) is transformed into a powerful healing force, capable of treating a wide range of mental and physical imbalances. It is often the first choice for cold sores around the lips and mouth, wings of the nose or even the chin. It is especially useful in the early phases where the upper lip is swollen, but no vesicle has appeared. When they do they are large and clear, or there may be a cluster of small watery blisters. The person needing Nat mur often has dry, chapped lips which may crack, particularly in the middle or possibly corners. The mouth may tend towards dryness too, with an unusual degree of thirst. Besides the usual stimuli, exposure to the sun or hot weather can trigger a cold sore. Nat mur is particularly indicated if an emotional upset is involved, such as an episode of depression, grief, loss or weeping. The Nat mur individual is usually stoic and repressed in their emotional expression, feeling they must just bear the burden silently and without alerting others to their condition. To this end they often reject help or sympathy (though craving it secretly) which may provoke an irritable reaction or a bursting forth of held back tears.
Rhus tox
Homeopathy heals by using substances that can cause the very symptoms they can cure. What better remedy then, for blister-like eruptions than potencies made from poison ivy (Rhus toxicodendron)! In spite of its noxious reputation, Rhus tox is part of the Cashew Family of plants, which also includes the Mango. Rhus is appropriate for the entire group of herpetic eruptions that affect the body. It is our main remedy for shingles (herpes zoster), as well as the most frequently indicated medicine for chickenpox (Varicella). Herpes that is cured by Rhus is liable to be burning and itching, and there may be seepage of an acrid fluid from yellow-looking vesicles. The cold sores may occur around the lips, nose or chin. It is very effective for the stage of crusting or where there is a combination of crusting and secondary infection. In fact Rhus is one of our main remedies for impetigo, a common bacterial infection occurring around the lips and face of children. It often follows Nat mur to finish off the cold sore, or precedes Hepar sulph if a true abscess has formed. A person needing Rhus tox is usually sensitive to cold open air and dampness, and a herpes episode may be accompanied by a general fever or can precede an attack of diarrhea.
Sepia
Though the ink of the squid was known as a medicine in antiquity, the unique resourcefulness of homeopathy has turned this strange substance into a precise and scientific healing agent. An important remedy for hormonal imbalances in women, Sepia has herpetic eruptions around the lips, corners of mouth and particularly around the nasal area with crusty eruptions inside and on the nose. The face may have a sallow, with a yellowish cast, especially around the mouth. A tell-tale Sepia symptom, occasionally seen, is a brownish saddle-like pigmentation on the nose and cheeks. The Sepia individual often has dark circles under the eyes, is exhausted, chilly and depressed. Sepia is especially appropriate for problems during pregnancy, before menses or during menopause, and this includes cold sores. It is also especially useful for herpes in children.
Dulcamara
This member of the Potato family, with its tiny purple and yellow flowers, is found climbing along fences and hedgerows around temperate North America. Dulcamara can have thick brown herpetic crusts on the face, with reddish borders, bleeding when scratched. It is appropriate for herpes that appears in clusters, oozing watery fluid, often accompanied by glandular swelling. Burning, stinging, itching sensations may be present and are worse from cold water. Dulcamara people have an extreme sensitivity to damp and cold, and an eruption of herpes may occur after rain or sudden changes from warm to cold or damp weather. Eruptions are also more likely to appear around menses.
Hepar sulph
Like many of the remedies discussed above, this mineral combination of calcium and sulphur can treat both herpes labialis and herpes zoster. The eruption may occur around the mouth and lips, and occasionally follow the path of the nerves across the face or even around or into the eye. They appear moist and weepy. Hepar is particularly needed where herpes vesicles have become infected, indicated by formation of yellow pus. In fact it is our main remedy for painful and tender boils, pimples or abscess. Herpes vesicles and infected pimples can spread by merging and coalescing together, forming an unsightly mass. Herpes can quickly control infection in most cases, avoiding the need for antibiotics.
Dosage
Homeopathic remedies are available in various potencies, such as 6, 12 or 30. They are also available in the decimal scale (6x or 12x) or centesimal scale (6c or 12c). A simple rule of thumb is that the lower number means a remedy that works more physically and for shorter periods of time. The same applies for the “x” scale of potencies. The higher numbers and the “c” scale work somewhat longer and deeper, and may need to be used less often. But whatever potency is chosen, it can be used frequently (every one to two hours) during the early stage of a break-out. As symptoms improve a remedy can be taken one to three times daily. For the 30c strength once a day is usually enough at this stage.
Homeopathy allows the body to heal itself naturally, producing no side effects or toxicity. Though there can be a temporary increase in sensations during the use of homeopathic remedies, this is minimal in the case of an acute herpes attack. An important additional benefit is the long term effects the remedies. If used during several subsequent episodes, it is entirely likely that they will begin to occur less frequently and with less virulence, due to the deep curative effects of the remedy. Homeopathy, clearing the predispositions and tendencies towards illness, homeopathy can, as the founder of homeopathy Dr. Samuel Hahnemann first demonstrated, truly eradicate disease from the human body and mind.
From the ancient games of Greece and Asia, to the ballplayers of prehistoric Mayan civilization, to modern day Olympic medallists, the form and style of sports have varied tremendously. But one thing has remained constant—sports injuries. Since humans learned to appreciate the competition, skills and challenge of physical sport, they have also learned the joy of shin splints, tendonitis, and hamstring pulls.
Today, sports medicine is a ‘growth industry’ with over 40,00 team doctors assigned to schools, colleges, and professional teams, and hundreds of sports clinics and centers all over the country. Sports medicine is now a bonafide medical specialty, and is an important part of the practice of many chiropractors today. Yet homeopathy has something unique to offer to the realm of trauma management, while being a natural complement and synergist to chiropractic care.
As a natural, non-toxic form of medicine, homeopathy can effectively reduce typical pain, swelling and inflammation. Beyond this, tissue healing is accelerated to a remarkable degree, without suppressive drugs. Taken before activity, homeopathy acts as a preventive, reducing the effects of overstrain or potential injury. It is also a clinical observation that stamina and performance is enhanced by the use of specific homeopathic remedies. This is a rich area for future scientific study. Like vitamins and other biological supplements, homeopathic remedies, prepared from plants or minerals, enhance physiological functioning in a natural and congruent way.
Exquisitely elegant and and simple in its conception, in its deeper application homeopathy can be incredibly complex and, yes, difficult. Fortunately, for injuries and trauma of the musculoskeletal system, homeopathy provides a straight-forward approach which is easy to learn and apply, yet extremely effective.
Homeopathy uses remedies which stimulate the inherent process of self-healing. The correspondence of a remedy to the internal needs of the body/mind can be arrived at through matching the symptoms of a suffering person with the symptoms produced by a remedy in a healthy person. Symptoms are an accurate language of how the body is attempting to correct itself, and leads to a remedy which matches the internal healing mechanisms already at work. From the point of view of acute injuries and local conditions the symptoms called ‘modalities’—the circumstances which make the condition worse or better—are important points to differentiate remedies that seem equally indicated.
There are also other paths that can guide us to the correct homeopathic prescription. Remedies may correspond to the cause of the illness, such as an injury, an emotional shock or an environmental stress, like dampness or extreme heat. The specific location and tissues involved can also strongly influence the selection of a remedy especially where the problem is local, such as in the case of injuries. In chronic disease local problems are often part of an overall chemical and biological imbalance, so that this information is not as persuasive, though still useful. The accompanying anatomical diagram of the knee joint graphically demonstrates the correspondence between remedies and specific types of tissue in the musculoskeletal system.
Though the final choice of remedy must rest on the exact and unique symptoms a person is experiencing, the type of illness (inflammation, spasm, swelling, bruising, etc.) provides a useful therapeutic short-cut in treating acute illness, narrowing our search to a reasonable group of remedies. In the remedy descriptions below, the location (or type of tissue), the pathophysiology (inflammation, weak ligaments, overstrains, etc.), the possible cause (injury, etc.) and subjective symptoms (and modalities) are all part of the cumulative information which leads us to a healing prescription.
Arnica (Leopard’s Bane)
Arnica montana, a Daisy-like plant growing in the Rocky Mountains, has extraordinary power over the effects of injury. Shock, bruising, swelling, pain—all find rapid relief when Arnica is taken as soon as possible after any type of trauma. If an injury in the past had a serious and lasting negative effect, either locally or on the whole health, Arnica, in a 200 or 1M strength can be used with sometimes dramatic effect, even if the the injury occurred dozens of years before. Arnica is an excellent preventive taken before dental work, surgery, extreme exertion or joint manipulation or mobilization. It is also our best remedy for muscle strains and pulls, in which case it can also be used as an external application in the form of a liquid tincture, gel or ointment. Arnica is also needed for injuries to the eye, ear, and for fears or nightmares after any type of trauma.
Hypericum (St. John’s Wort)
What Arnica is to muscular strain and trauma in general, Hypericum is to nerve tissue. For blows or falls affecting nerve-rich tissues, such as the head, spine, coccyx or fingertips, this plant has the effect of reducing pain and accelerating the healing of damaged nerves. Like Arnica, Hypericum can be used for injuries in the remote past, such as a shocking blow to the head. In this case, Natrum sulph is also an important remedy to consider, especially if there are alterations in mental capabilities after such an event. Another major effect of Hypericum is the prevention of infection, even tetanus, at the site of a cut or puncture wound. Here it can also be used externally, or as a healing and soothing wash for sunburned skin.
Bellis (Daisy)
The Daisy is similar to Arnica but is appropriate to more chronic or recurrent injuries, or those that have accrued for a long period of time. In traditional homeopathic literature it is called the ‘old gardener’s remedy. Today we might call it the “old computer user’s remedy”—an important remedy for repetitive strain disorders such as carpel tunnel syndrome, ankle sprains, scalenus anticus syndrome, etc.
Ledum (Labrador Tea)
Ledum is well known in homeopathy as a remedy for gout and arthritis. From the perspective of injury and trauma, it is for deep bruising and discoloration. Both Arnica and Bellis treat bruises effectively, but where there is very extensive bruising or hematoma such as with a fracture or black eye, Ledum is unequalled in its ability to rapidly resolve large areas of extravasation.
Rhus tox (Poison Ivy)
Though poison ivy is the last thing you want to meet with in the forest, it is nature’s best medicine when there are sprained joints or ligaments. Homeopathic pharmaceutical methods transform Rhus tox into an effective non-toxic remedy, which has a strong affinity to the entire joint structure. It is excellent after Arnica in any sprain or strain, but also is used extensively for chronic joint problems, including osteoarthritis, due to prolonged wear and tear or living in damp, cold environments.
Ruta (Garden Rue)
Ruta is indicated for trauma to tendons, cartilage or periosteum. Its therapeutic effect is directed towards the site of osseous attachment of tendon or ligament. It has a marked predilection to joints where there are complex ligamentous attachments, with a distinct affinity to the wrist, the knee, the low back and the cervical spine, as well as sprains to the shoulder or achilles tendon. It is an important remedy for chronic trauma to the tempero-mandibular cartilage—TMJ syndrome.
Symphytum (Comfrey)
Comfrey is a traditional herbal remedy that has the well-earned nickname of ‘Knit Bone’. Homeopathic experience has confirmed the effectiveness of Symphytum for accelerating the healing of fractures in as little as half the time. It is also used for non-union of fractures, and for blows or injuries to the the bony orbit of the eye or the sclera itself.
In acute conditions we may use the appropriate remedy in the 30th or 200th strength as often as needed. Ideally, as soon as improvement begins we can reduce the frequency or even stop until improvement ceases, and then resume taking the remedy when symptoms recur. In practice this is not always practical and we may take a remedy according to the following protocol. In very severe injury this may be every 15 minutes or hourly. With improvement or in more chronic situations, a remedy can be taken three times daily, tapering down to once per day. This regimen can be continued for up to several weeks to accomplish complete healing. Remember too that combinations are readily available of these remedies are useful and effective in musculoskeletal conditions, being considerably more efficient of the doctor’s and patient’s time, cutting down on possible prescribing errors for the novice homeopath.
Whatever other methods of care we may use to assist recuperation, homeopathy should form a part of the healing regimen. A natural complement to successful Chiropractic practice, it is safe, effective, and relies upon our deep inherent resources of biological vitality and intelligence.
